Introduction
- 「Rhizomatiks Research」will be inviting Kyle Mcdonald, a New York based technician / artist active in the development of software and international media projects, as a lecturer and teacher for a workshop. The theme will be “Machine Learning / Deep Learning for art”. He will be showing how to use Python as a base to use deep learning while combining openFrameworks and other tools.
The workshop focuses on Python language-based tools such as "Keras", "Chainer", "sklearn", but will also introduce some Torch, a Lua language based framework. The purpose of this workshop is to be familiarize the participants with the theme of machine learning. We will first familiarize with some of the code by running sample code to solve interesting problems and modifying it. - We can then use the result of the execution in openFrameworks. Much of the sample code derive from technology used in deep learning. We will start by using generic tools such as “word2vec”, “t-SNE”, “PCA”, and generating 2D and 3D graphs from unstructured data. We will also be picking up on technologies such as character-based text generation ("char-rnn") and image-related algorithms such as image classification and discuss their creative reuse such as application like “style transfer”.

Mainly handling troubles arising in enterprises, the emergency response team responds to major troubleshooting that have a major business impact and proceed a high degree of emergency. During my former career at Fujitsu, I published a book called “Packet analysis techniques for the field” from ASCII publishing, that illustrates techniques used during my time at the troubleshooting team and experience with network failure handling. It deals not only with packet analysis but also various problems occurring on the Windows platform such as troubleshooting the cause of bluescreen, hang ups, slowdowns, OS debugging, RDP, and much more.
- Jono Brandel
- Born on 1986. relies on the combination of two fundamental disciplines: graphic design and computer programming. The results of this mixture vary in form, but usually have a screen-based component. He explores procedural aesthetics.

Neural network artwork created by Kyle Mcdonald
- ‘Style Transfer Studies’
- The Photo of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol and the photo of Mt. Fuji are depicted in different styles from which Western Europe artwork can be traced from cave pictures to minimalism, and pop art.
- ‘abstract landscape’
- ‘starry night in nyc’
These video works are made in the same process of the still photos. They are created by taking a frame from the video and testing different "style transfer" parameters on the image. Such parameters that are changed pertain to how much white noise, iteration, size of the texture, and also what style to transfer. When something seems nice, they are applied to all of the other frames of the video to create a GIF or animation. (Kyle Mcdonald)
- ‘NeuralTalk and Walk‘
- An experiment by Kyle Mcdonald of image recognition using the method "NeuralTalk" by Andrej Karpathy. NeuralTalk is trained using a data set including a set of images of 100 thousand pairs of situations - captions of Microsoft "Microsoft Common Objects in Context (MS COCO)". It then recognizes an incoming input image and generates a caption of what it thinks it sees. I walked around the city of Amsterdam with a MacBook Pro running NeuralTalk. The result of image recognition of the city landscape by web cam is displayed in text. MacBook Pro is made in 2013, with NVIDIA 750M, with a GPU memory of only 2 GB.
Neural network artwork created by Daito Manabe
- ‘neural portrate test 0’
- A test video iterating through the style of Daito Manabe's portrait to match the painting style of Seiichiro Inokuma.
- 'Cinema Analysis using IBM Watson™ Visual Recognition service' (2015)
IBM's cognitive system using artificial intelligence technology, IBM Watson, analysis data of the movie starring Mr. Masahiro Motoki. Watson was “shown” television appearance clips when Masahiro was the interview partner for Daito Manabe. Watson analyzed every second of the video, and tag the content of the scene from what it analyzes such as “ indoors, people being…”. By analyzing the whole movie through this method, a trend appears for each movie.

Profile
- Kyle McDonald
- サKyle researches on the relationship of sound and code, and explores the transformation, contextualization and similarity between the two. Having learned philosophy and computer science, I realize complex algorithms and structures into playful and accessible forms that are intractable with philosophies that everyone can do themselves. In the autumn of 2011, he was invited as a visiting researcher for the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media Studies. Firstly with openFrameworks, he has actively participated in open source art engineering by producing highly functional addons for image processing and computer vision libraries. For the past few years, he also has adapted these technologies to create 3D scanners out of pattern projection technology and later with the Microsoft Kinect sensor. His camera based artwork range from very structured to those that strategically throw a question.
- Yusuke Tomoto(Rhizomatiks Research)
- Programmer. Born in Tokyo in 1982. Completed the Waseda University Department of Physics and Applied Physics department Graduate School of Science and Engineering. Joined Rhizomatiks after being an R&D engineer in a leading medical device manufacturer company. Headed technical aspects in projects such as "border" (programming), "Perfume 4th Tour in DOME" LEVEL 3 "supported by Chocola BB" (3D scanning system programming), "traders" (system programming), "sensing streams invisible, inaudible" (Sensor system · Video programming), "Nike RISE" House of Mamba "(tracking system programming)," and the Dead angle of Graphic Design” (data analysis).
